For our second MANA Day, those who were eligible spent the day at Ngamotu Beach! A couple of students were playing with frisbees and some were just chilling on the beach. Some kids were playing touch on the sand and some were playing volleyball under the sun. The classes got to visit Mr Whippy’s van and buy some ice cream! There were many activities so everyone wouldn’t get bored, and Miss Feaunati had her speaker and was jamming songs while we were all having fun. We brought some of the school lunches in case some kids were hungry. Although no one was allowed to swim, the school still had a great time. At the end of the day, everyone walked back to school for a bit of excercise, while helpers stayed behind to put everything away.
Explanation Writing – Ice Cream in a Bag
Today we wrapped up our Explanation Writing unit by making ice cream in a bag. After we had finished making and trying the ice cream we spent some time to write out the process. Check out our writing below
Kayaking
We had our last session up at the pool today, and what better way to end off the swimming unit that getting out the kayaks. We were encouraged to bring along clothes to swim in to get a feel for moving around in the water in something other than togs, we competed in some kayak relays, as well as practicing falling out of the kayak and then making our way to safety.
Devon Wipeout
Today was our first MANA Reward day for the year , our ahiahi MANA was Devon Wipeout, and everyone from ruma tekau was eligible. We got to move around the school at our own pace and go through different stations, including: the swimming pool, a bouncy castle, a water balloon wall, a waterslide, sponge face – where we got to throw a sponge at Miss Mercer’s face, as well as some obstacles like an army crawl. There was music playing, and the sun was out. It was a great first MANA Reward.
Swimming Standards 2023
Our first school event is over and done with and the pool terraces were alive with green as the students of Ruma Tekau and Discovery swam and chanted their way to the win. It was awesome to see some many students from our class getting in, giving it their best, and doing themselves and our class proud.
Geometric Art
For one of our cyber smart lessons, we created these geometric pieces of art. We also learnt how to provide good feedback to our peers.
First we watched Austins Butterfly, which showed us how important it is to give postive, specific, objective feedbacl/feedforward that will help our classmates to improve their work. We then practised this and gave our classmates feedback on their first geometric art drafts.

Manawatia a Matariki – Matariki Puanga Sleepover
Rooms 6 and 12 celebrated the first ever Matariki Public Holiday by having a sleepover in the school library. We shared dinner together, went on a blind bush trial walk through some of the school bush area, played spotlight (Miss Mercer and Miss Feaunati defiantly need special mention, they had the best hiding spots and were so committed to not being found), spent some time reflecting on our year, watched a movie and finally went to sleep. The teachers didn’t get much sleep because we woke up so early, but unfortunately it was cloudy so we couldn’t see Puanga, even though we tried. After breakfast and clean up we were off to spend the rest of the day with our whanau.
Food Court Day
What started off as learning about decimals became a day of learning celebration.
We started off by learning all about decimals, we then used what we had learnt to work out the cost of a 3-course meal for our whanau using menus from different eateries around Taranaki.
From there we created our own restaurants in small groups, deciding what kind of restaurant we would like to open and what kind of meals we would offer on the menu. We then had to put our learning from Digitals Technology to the test and create a website page for our restaurant – check it out – https://sites.google.com/devonint.school.nz/food-court/home
Finally, we had to chose one meal to actually cook and sell. We needed to calculate the cost of all the ingredients, and then calculate how much to sell our meals for, making sure that we would make 25% profit.
On Monday we spent the morning cooking our meals up in the food tech room, and then in block 2 we set up stalls in the class to create a food court before getting to go around buying and selling the food we had created.
Our Digital Footprints
We are learning that everything we look at, click on, upload, download, comment or share leaves a footprint.
We used History (Ctrl H) on our Chromebook to look at all the places we have been online in the 24 hours.
We placed icons of these websites on the beach and used footprints to mark our trail.
This represented our digital footprint for the last 24 hours.
